The fog

Being present is driving through fog. You can’t see what is ahead or behind even if you wanted to. You might feel a little lost here and there but you know it doesn’t matter as long as you keep following each line on the road, moving forward, foot by foot.

The busyness of the traffic goes quiet just like your mind. You feel content although visibility ahead is limited. Normally you’d feel scared of the unknown, the factors outside of your control. But with perspective you know the roads are safer than if it snowed, and it’s just as easy to see as if it were raining, maybe even better since your windshield wipers sit quietly for the ride.

Somehow everything sort of feels new. It may be a road you’ve driven thousands of times but because it’s unrecognizable, it takes you on a renewing trip, unique to you in this moment. You are here now, wherever that is.

Next time you feel as if your mind is in a fog, you can sit back, think about how calm the fog makes you feel and enjoy its work to keep things simple, in the moment, in the mist.
